THE RELATIONSHIP NEEDS EXERCISE:

Objective: to solidify just how few of your needs actually were met in your last relationship, and how to start fine-tuning what you deserve so you can attract the right person for you. Also, you need to get clear on what you truly need so you can see it show up in your future relationships.

Material: You only need a pen and paper (or preferably a journal you can store this in once you’re done)

Step:1

Visit the Center For Nonviolent Communication to grab your list of 60+ needs.

Step 2:

Create a simple table that looks like this:

Of course, you don’t have to use this table, but this is just a nice guideline for how to organize the instructions I provided.

You have full creative autonomy here, so trust what you feel is best for you.

Step 3: Analyze your findings

This is the illuminating part. Answer some of these questions to help deepen this new awareness:

  • Which needs went completely unmet in my last relationship which I see now are hugely important for me? How does this make me feel? Sad, angry, resentful, or grateful now that I know?

  • Which needs am I clear on that are 100% “non-negotiable” (dealbreakers if unmet) in my future relationship?

  • Does this exercise reveal more about my previous relationships, too? If so, in what way?

This was a BIG lesson. I hope you challenged yourself to get through it all!

I’ll see you next week for our third and last lesson together! How time flies.

PS. Which lesson, 1 or 2, did you find more insightful? Write me and share your experience! nancy@hellobreakup.com
